Why Are There Liberals in the Pulpit

We got this idea, I believe by a quick scan of different headlines, and one blog title came up. We won’t be discussing that blog found here, but the question in the title. To start we will address our own experience when we were on an internship over 40 years ago.

The internship was part of our degree program and the tradition was you did two months over the summer between your junior and senior year. There was one occasion where we were talking to our internship supervisor and we said the truth was…

He came back with ‘that is your interpretation of the truth’. We said no, it was the truth and for several minutes he kept harping on the concept it was our interpretation.

The end of the story is that the encounter found its way in some format in his internship report to the school and we did not get licensed the following partially due to that report.

But this incident gives one reason why there are liberals in the church pulpit. No one wants the truth, and if they do not like what other people say then they pass it off as ‘personal interpretation.’

If no one wants to hear the truth, then those who preach another gospel have free reign to bring their ideology to the pulpit and proclaim it like it was coming from Jesus.

Then if we were actually wrong, no one is interested in making corrections to what we said or to what anyone else says when it comes to biblical subjects. The failure to correct errant people allows for misguided and liberal-leaning people to preach what they want to and still call it Christian.

These people tell the governing bodies who will license them what they want to hear and once they get their licenses they begin to preach their own ideas. But that is not the only way liberals get into the pulpit. Matthew 24:11 says

And many false prophets will rise up and mislead many people.

Notice that Jesus did not say exactly where they would rise up or in what locations they will mislead the people. It happens everywhere and the best evidence is found in our Bible Colleges and seminaries.

The American Ivy League schools all started out as Christian yet as time went on the standards for faculty hiring relaxed and soon the schools turned secular. This has happened in many schools all over the world.

We know that the professors, many of them, in our old undergrad alma matar do not preach the same gospel as Jesus and the disciples taught. We also know of other top ‘Christian’ schools that teach evolution as fact.

What is sad is none of the people in charge of those schools correct the faulty teaching of their professors. Once those students graduate, they enter the pulpit with a different gospel and they pass it on to their congregations.

There are exceptions to this rule and one fired Professor Chris Rollston an expert on semitic languages for his liberal views. We know Dr. Cargill and have talked to him in the past. He is an atheist who thinks that unbelievers can teach the Bible.

That is how more liberals get into the pulpit. They are taught in part by unbelieving bible scholars who do not have the truth and many of their students adopt that thinking or accept what is taught them.

After graduation, they too try to find a preaching position in one of the many denominations. If you scroll down to the list of scholars that have signed Dr. Cargill’s position, you will see a sampling of how wide their infl;uence is.

We know someof those people and have talked to them in the past and none of the ones we know could pass for being a disciple of Jesus. Their views are not in line with scripture.

Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Mt. 7:15

Many of the people on that list and on the faculty rolls in other schools are exactly like that. Many hide it well. If you think this was only an NT warning or problem think again as the OT talks about false prophets rising up as well

The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule on their own authority; And My people love it this way! But what will you do when the end comes? Jeremiah 5:31

The basic reason why there are false prophets and liberals in the many different pulpits is that we let them be there. Very few people are brave enough to follow God’s instructions and bar preachers, etc., from the church, bible colleges, and seminaries who do not accept the gospel Jesus and the apostles brought nor preach it.

This is why there are liberals in the pulpit. Why churches have become this is has many reasons as well. One is that many congregations are not godly,  or they do not examine the scriptures to see what they are being told is correct or not, are afraid to get a bad reputation for blocking people who claim to be Christian yet do not believe God’s word and so on.

Then another good reason is that they ‘want to be on the right side of history’ and follow secular culture by shattering the supposed glass ceiling. They hire women to look good to the secular world in defiance of God’s word.

No one is on the right side of history when they disobey God. We are not alone in this as there are other calls to get real men of God back into the pulpit. But it takes a concentrated effort to get the church back to where it should be and led by men who accept and preach the gospel that Jesus and his disciples brought.

Christian bible colleges and seminaries need to be brought to task by the churches they serve and the denominations they are a member. We need men of God back in the pulpit who will preach God’s standards not rights of individuals.

In other words, the churches of the world and its members need a back bone and stand with Christ over liberal ideology. You won’t get the truth and grow strong in the Lord, if you keep accepting people who do not want the truth or dismiss it as ‘your personal interpretation.’

But false prophets also appeared among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2 Peter 2:1

We have seen this at work in our own undergrad college and other places we know that started out as Christian. It takes courage to get the job done and it takes obeying God.

Who will answer the call to bring God back to the pulpit and stand in the breach to stop the ungodly invasion of the church?
