What Is The Gospel?

28 Sep

Last week we wrote on Unity and that true believers in Christ cannot be united with those who bring a different gospel. The verse what fellowship does light have with darkness was used to illustrate that those who bring a different gospel do not walk with God nor have God in them.

This week our text is from Gal. 1 and we quote:

I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you [c]by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel [d]contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be [e]accursed!

This brings us to our first very important question

I. What Is The Gospel Jesus & His  Disciples Brought?

We can boil down the gospel or good news to John 3:16-17 which read:

16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His [e]only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

These two verses are good news indeed. They contain everything we need to know about our being free from sin.We can add to those two verses the passage from 2 Cor. 5 which tells us that when we are redeemed by Christ we are new creatures, the old man has passed away and a new one is born.  This passage is why I say that there is no such thing as a homosexual or transgender Christian.  Those people claiming to be redeemed are still identifying with the person they used to be, the old man and are saying that Christ did not redeem them.

If they are new creatures in Christ then they are no longer the person trapped in sin, practicing sinful ways. They are made new.

But we must be cautious and not stop with the good news John 3:16 & 17. If those verses were all that there was to the gospel or Christian life then God would not have had to write the rest of the NT. What we can say then is that John 3:16 &17 are the beginning of the gospel only. These verses are not its entirety but simply put us on the path of receiving the good news that comes from God.

The rest of the Bible, and I will include the OT here, is also part of the gospel because the rest of the Bible gives us our answers to all our questions. In the whole Bible we find the good news of God– our origins, how to live, how to please God and who God is. This includes how to be holy like him. If that is not good news then nothing else qualifies.  How is it not good news to find out what we are to do? How is it not good news to learn the answers to our questions? How is it not good news to learn the truth?

In the post on Unity I quoted the scripture of Jesus praying & in his prayer he said ‘thy word is truth.’  Where do we get God’s word? From all of the Bible not just John 3:16 & 17. This brings us to our second very important question.

II. What Are The Different Gospels?

I need to use the word ‘are’ because they are many. And we just do not have time to go into them all in detail.  We need to start with a clear definition of what is a different gospel.

Anything that disagrees with or alters the text of the Bible is a different gospel

This means that those people who try to re-translate specific passages in order to support their personal views or desires are not bringing the gospel that Jesus and his disciples brought. They are bringing their own version of the gospel.not God’s. These passages include allowing sin to be practiced or accepted into the church, call evil good and let people occupy positions in the church God has barred them from holding.

Some specific examples of a different gospel are found in the eastern religions,Islam, and all the cultic religions like JWs and Mormonism.  These keep enough truth of the Bible to fool people. Then there is theistic evolution and progressive creationism. these are a different gospel for God,Jesus& his disciples did not represent our origins and development came through a natural process.

Finally, we need to address the modern trend of progressive christianity. The adherents of this faulty faith say that God& Christianity change as culture changes. Their view means that instead of Christianity being a light unto a dark world, the dark world is a light unto God, the Bible and Christianity. These people think that the deceived world knows more than God.

These people are very deceived and have been led astray from the truth.  They reject so much biblical teaching that they have nothing to offer the sinful world and merely keep people in their sins. That is not good news at all.  The good news saves people from their sins, not keep them trapped in them. The Gospel has something to offer those in need of a savior. Something that is not the same as what the deceived world brings to life.

The gospel has a message from God that is liberating and true. The gospel represents God as God represents himself, telling the truth so that the sinful world knows what they must do to be saved and to please God.
