People say God bless or God bless us all the time. This isn’t limited to just believers as non-believers and people of other religions use the terms as well but why would anyone expect God to bless them if they do not follow God’s commands and instructions and do not teach their children and grandchildren to do the same?
5“Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments, just as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should act according to them in the land which you go to possess.
6Therefore be careful to observe them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes, and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’
7“For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him?
8And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day?
9Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren (Deut. 4 NKJV)
We may not be entering into the promised land of Canaan but we do expect and want our children and grandchildren to enter into our Promised Land– heaven.
So maybe instead of saying God bless and other similar statements we focus on obeying what God has commanded and instructed us to do correctly and then teach the right way to our families.
