Making America Great

04 Aug

For a stretch there, every time we finished one internet session, we were given another but for today we had to buy access to take care of some personal business. This gave us time to talk about this topic. The two presidential candidates have mentioned, especially Mr. Trump, that they want to make America great again. it is a lofty goal, one that appeals to many Americans who have suffered long under the diminishing role America has played the past 2 decades.

But how does one make America great again? The answer is not in economics, military might, or even supporting social issues that have become popular in recent years. The answer lies in the Bible and while both presidential candidates claim to be some form of a Christian, they do not look to the Bible for their answers nor do they live their lives according to what God has commanded

But if people are serious about making their country great then there are a few verses they should consider first before venturing out and taking America down the wrong path.

The first are found in Deut.

Dt 6:1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,
Dt 6:2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear q the LORD your God as long as you live r by keeping all his decrees and commands s that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life

Dt 6:5 Love z the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Dt 6:6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.
Dt 6:7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Dt 6:8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Dt 6:9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates

Dt 6:13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths  in his name.
Dt 6:14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you;
Dt 6:15 for the LORD your God , who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land.
Dt 6:16 Do not test the LORD your God (NIV)

While those verses are talking to the people of Israel, they can and do apply to all nations. God wants all people to be saved and obedient to his commands thus they are not excluded from this charge. But there are more verses which need to be added to this list. The second set comes from Exodus 23 and they say:

“You shall not pervert the justice due to your needy brother in his dispute. Keep far from a false charge, and do not kill the innocent or the righteous, for I will not acquit the guilty.

“You shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and [a]subverts the cause of the just.(NASB)

Too often throughout America and other western countries justice and the innocent are the losers as bribes and other perversions influence the outcome of many proceedings. The the book of Proverbs weighs in on the subject

Pr 3:13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,
Pr 3:14 for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
Pr 3:15 She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Pr 3:16 Long life is in her right hand;  in her left hand are riches and honor.
Pr 3:17 Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
Pr 3:18 She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed (NIV)

If the presidential candidates found real wisdom and understanding, how different their campaigns would be and how differently would the country run. Instead of applying God and the Bible in name only, we may get real leadership, one that steers America and other countries away from trouble and other calamities God will bring against those who defy his word.

Finally we come to what is one of the sorest problems vexing America to date and that is the calling of evil good and good evil. The rise in support for LGBTQ people has led America and other Western nations down a dark path. Their support for sin doe snot allow them to be great but continues to diminish their impact on the world. God has this to say about those who do this:

Isaiah 5:19-21

19 Who say, “Let Him make speed, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it;
And let the purpose of the Holy One of Israel draw near
And come to pass, that we may know it!”
20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who [a]substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;
Who [b]substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
And clever in their own sight! (NASB)

The word ‘woe’ never brings with it rewards and prosperity. If the presidential candidates and other Americans want their nation great again, then they need to withdraw their support for evil and stop calling it good. They also need to stop persecuting those who are good, who oppose evil and stand with them instead. Practicing evil is what has destroyed the pre-flood world, Sodom and Gomorrah, Babylon, Nineveh and many other great ancient nations. The modern nations should pause and take note of the fate of those who came before them and learn from their mistakes.

But sadly we doubt they will as they do not believe in the lessons and examples God has left for them to learn from.

Finally, all Americans should honestly turn to prayer and not praying for their own desires but strength, courage and guidance on how to turn from the practice of evil and do what is right in the eyes of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 7:14 tells us

and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

If people want America great again, then they need to humble themselves and pray correctly so that God will heal their land. Without fervent and real prayer don’t look for America to turn the tide of its demise.Psalm 37:11 tells us

But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

America needs to become humble, as do all the western nations, for they govern only at the permission of God and that permission can be revoked at any time. No one is entitled to leadership and they need to get it right for they too will have to give an account of their actions to God as Paul tells us:

Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; Romans 3:19

So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God. Romans 14:12 (NASB)

Government officials are a part of the world and ‘each of us’ and how they govern will be called into account.
